The Ocean City Dream

Opinion

By Pete Madden

I remember coming here as a child with my parents, the anticipation of crossing the bridge, and the feeling that this place was different. It wasn’t just a vacation. It was where families came together, where traditions were built, and where moments turned into lifelong memories.

In 1986, my family bought a home here. For more than 20 years, Ocean City was where we came back to again and again. Summers on the beach. Nights on the boardwalk. Holidays like Thanksgiving and Easter were spent together with my parents and grandparents. Those weren’t just visits. They were the foundation of what family meant to me.

Like so many others, I fell in love with Ocean City long before I ever imagined calling it home.

As I got older, that connection deepened. My twin brother and I spent our summers working at Johnson’s Popcorn. Those days taught me more than just how to work hard. They taught me about responsibility, about people, and about being part of something bigger than yourself. We weren’t just serving customers, we were part of families’ traditions, seeing the same faces come back year after year.

More than 20 years ago, I made the decision to build my life here.

I didn’t inherit anything. I built a business, raised my family, and invested in this community just like so many of you have. I’ve had the privilege of watching my children grow up here from a very young age, in a town defined by strong schools, safe neighborhoods, and people who care about one another.

That is the Ocean City dream.

But a dream like this does not sustain itself. It takes leadership, commitment, and a willingness to step forward.

That’s why I got involved.

On the Board of Education, and later as its president, I worked to strengthen our schools and expand opportunity. Supporting school choice brought new energy into our district while protecting jobs and maintaining the high standard of education our families expect. At the same time, I stood firmly behind our teachers and the people who make our schools work.

As a current city councilman and former City Council President, I have been honored to play a key role in shaping modern Ocean City. My focus has been on supporting local businesses, prioritizing public safety, and making thoughtful decisions regarding growth to protect the unique character of our town.

Now, I’m running for Mayor because I believe we are at a defining moment.

My parents always told me to treat people the way you want to be treated. That belief has stayed with me my entire life, and it’s exactly how I will lead.

As Mayor, I won’t pressure people or push past the voices of our community. I will listen. I will respect different perspectives. And I will bring people together to move Ocean City forward the right way.

Because the future of this community matters too much to get wrong.

Ocean City has always been a place where people come to build something. Families. Businesses. Traditions. But the next chapter of our story depends on the choices we make today.

For our seniors who want to stay active and connected in the community they love.
For families who are building their future here.
And for every visitor who comes to create lasting memories in America’s greatest family resort.

The Ocean City dream is real. I’ve lived it.

Now it’s about protecting it, strengthening it, and leading it forward.

This is my home, and I’m ready to lead Ocean City into its next chapter.
