A “Big League” Afternoon: Ocean City Baseball Set for Star-Studded Senior Day
The boys of summer are bringing a taste of Citizens Bank Park to the Jersey Shore this Friday. On May 1st, the Ocean City High School Red Raiders will host a Senior Day celebration that promises to be much more than just another game on the schedule.
When the Red Raiders take the field at the Richard S. Grimes Athletic Fields (5th & Bay Avenue) to face off against Absegami High School, the atmosphere will feel decidedly professional. Kickoff—or rather, first pitch—is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
A Touch of Phillies Magic
The highlight of the afternoon isn’t just the action on the diamond, but the legendary voices surrounding it. Dan Baker, the iconic PA announcer for the Philadelphia Phillies now in his 54th season, will be behind the microphone to announce the starting lineups and play-by-play.
Adding to the “pro” feel, the National Anthem will be performed by Al Norfleet. Known to many as the longtime bus driver for both the Phillies and the Eagles, Norfleet is a celebrated figure in the Philadelphia sports community who occasionally lends his vocal talents to the big leagues.
Honoring the Class of 2026
While the spectacle is grand, the heart of the day remains the eight student-athletes who have dedicated years to the Red Raider program. The 2021 New Jersey State Champions, currently sitting at a 5–7 record, will pause to honor the following seniors:
Kameron Street, Sean Hoag, Carter Linden, Josh Pashley, Jack Reilly, Hank Schafer, Cody Schweim, and Kyle Williams
The Phillies Connection
The professional influence on this year’s team isn’t just limited to the guest announcers. The Red Raiders benefit daily from the expertise of assistant coach Frank Coppenbarger. After a storied 38-year career in Major League Baseball—most recently as the Phillies’ Clubhouse Manager and Director of Team Travel—”Coach Cop” now shares his wisdom with the OCHS squad under Head Coach Andrew Bristol.
“It’s an extra special treat, for the seniors in particular, to have Dan Baker announce the game and Al Norfleet sing the National Anthem,” said Coppenbarger. “It’ll give us the feeling of a professional atmosphere.”
Local fans and families are encouraged to come out to 5th & Bay to support the seniors and enjoy a unique afternoon of high school baseball with a Major League flair.
