A Star on the Rise: Ocean City Sophomore’s Art to Hang in the U.S. Capitol
It’s a proud moment for Ocean City—and an even prouder one for a young artist whose talent is turning heads all the way to Washington, D.C.
Gillian Acocella, a sophomore at Ocean City High School, has captured the top prize in the 2025 Congressional Art Competition for New Jersey’s 2nd Congressional District. Her winning piece? A striking charcoal portrait of the iconic Marilyn Monroe—an image that blends timeless elegance with youthful artistic vision.
What started as a childhood love for drawing has blossomed into national recognition. Gillian’s work was chosen from a pool of submissions and will soon hang in the Cannon Tunnel of the U.S. Capitol Building, where thousands pass through each day. Not bad for someone who just turned sixteen.
This honor places Gillian among an elite group of high school artists from around the country whose work will be celebrated at a special reception in Washington, D.C. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity—and one she’s earned through dedication, passion, and pure artistic skill.
Her artistic roots run deep. With a mother and sister who are also artists, Gillian grew up surrounded by creativity. That foundation clearly shaped her work, which favors charcoal for its soft, smooth effect—but she’s far from done exploring. Colored pencils, paint, and new techniques are already in her sights as she continues to grow her skills.
And grow she will. Gillian plans to pursue her passion at the Savannah College of Art and Design, a fitting next step for a young woman whose future in the arts is as bold and inspiring as the portraits she creates.
From the band room, where she plays in the OCHS wind ensemble, to the walls of the Capitol, Gillian Acocella is making her mark—and Ocean City couldn’t be more proud.
