Cocoa, Community, and Catching Waves: Badfish Surf Club’s Santa Surf

The winter chill was no match for the festive spirit at North Street Beach today as the Badfish Surf Club gathered for its Santa Surf and meetup. Badfish Surf Club was founded this past May by Brooke Fisher, a lifelong surfer. The club has quickly transformed into a thriving community for women surfers of all ages and skill levels. Brooke caught her first wave at age ten, and surfing instantly became her life’s passion. “Surfing is life,” says Brooke.  She started the club to fill a void she felt growing up as the only surfer in her family. Her mission is simple yet profound: to create a welcoming space where women can find a “lineup” of their own, whether they are seasoned chargers or picking up a board for the very first time. The club has become a sanctuary for those who want to surf without the intimidation often found in crowded lineups.

Badfish Surf Club started as a Saturday group surf coaching program in Strathmere and has quickly blossomed into monthly meetups that foster a sense of community in and out of the lineup. Brooke’s vision of a “free, no-pressure paddle out” was on full display. The sight of women of all ages and experience navigating the December swells together served as a beautiful reminder that the ocean is a place for everyone.

The atmosphere on the sand was just as warm as the surfing was bold. Club members gathered on the beach after a spirited surf session, warming up with steaming cups of hot cocoa, coffee, and homemade goodies. Proving that Brooke’s goal of building a community is being realized with every breaking wave.

For those looking to join this saltwater sisterhood, the door is always open through their Instagram page. If you are interested in learning more about the club, send Brooke a DM. Today’s Santa Surf wasn’t just about catching waves in the cold; it was a celebration of how far the club has come in such a short time, and a sign of the many sunrises and swells still to come for this vibrant community.
