“Day Of The Dead” Halloween Costume Party Benefiting Ocean City Theatre Company

October in Ocean City is jam-packed with Halloween events for the kids. But today, we’re taking a closer look at a costume party exclusively for OC’s 21 and over crowd.

The Greater Ocean City Theatre Company (OCTC) is hosting their annual Halloween party on Saturday, November 1st at The Flanders Hotel. If you haven’t been before, you are missing out. This longstanding tradition is a must for Halloween enthusiasts.

While the party boasts extensive food and spirit offerings, a compelling dance floor, a competitive silent auction for coveted gift baskets, and Halloween-themed activities, it’s the remarkable costumes that steal the night.

“We have seen some incredibly creative and fun costumes, both from individuals and groups,” says Michael Hartman, OCTC’s Founding Artistic Director.

The most creative attendees even work Ocean City themes and happenings into their costume concepts.

“The year that the city implemented the raptors patrolling the boardwalk initiative, a group of friends came dressed as seagulls and raptors,” says Hartman.

Another memorable group came dressed as people on a roller coaster, possibly inspired by the GaleForce at Playland’s Castaway Cove.

“But one of my favorites was a group that came dressed as sports trophies!” They fully committed, covered head to toe in gold paint and breaking into character poses at various points during the night.

Last year, Yoga Ginger owner Suzanne Chew absolutely wowed as Black Swan in a stunning tutu and point shoes. She was escorted by an unrecognizable Jason Chew dressed as Edward Scissorhands from the 1990 film. Her inspiration came from her background as a dancer. “Once a ballerina, this time a Black Swan – dark, dramatic, and completely out of my norm. Edward Scissorhands by my side made it the perfect match. Halloween magic at its best. Not sure we will ever top that night,” recalls Suzanne.

The event is appropriately hosted at The Flanders. Not only is it one of the city’s premier event spaces, but the set design team at OCTC is able to use its historical backdrop to create a spooky and impressive atmosphere for the party.

“The team at The Flanders is fantastic! They are extremely accommodating and genuinely believe in the mission of OCTC, which is why they go above and beyond to host this important and enjoyable community fundraiser,” says Hartman.

“And of course, the intriguing tales of the ghost of Emily haunting The Flanders add a unique layer of spooky fun to the experience.”

The event is a key fundraiser for The Ocean City Theatre Company, a cornerstone for Ocean City’s cultural offerings. “By bringing high-quality, professional theatre to America’s Greatest Family Resort, OCTC is an economic generator and a driver of tourism. It provides local families with cultural experiences right in their community,” says Hartman. “Most importantly, OCTC runs numerous education programs that provide children and teens with opportunities to develop skills in acting, singing, and dancing. These programs help nurture young talent and instill confidence, discipline, and teamwork in participants.”

Sponsorship packages are available and play a vital role in the success of this event. OCTC depends on community sponsors to help cover costs such as food, decorations, the DJ, and the open bar! The 2025 sponsors to date include Fox Real Estate, The Kirner Family, The Exchange Club of Ocean City, The Ocean City Library, Michael Hartman and Jonathan Kreamer, JASM Marketing and Kane Dermatology. Potential sponsors can visit oceancitytheatrecompany.com or call 609-398-1118.
