Pedestrian Path on RT 52, Stainton Memorial Causeway, Scheduled for Maintenance

Ocean City Park way closure

The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) has announced a temporary closure of the sidewalk on the Route 52/Stainton Memorial Causeway. The closure is necessary to replace a section of the sidewalk as part of an ongoing ADA maintenance project.

According to the NJDOT advisory, the sidewalk will be closed between milepost 0 and milepost 2.0 starting Monday, October 27, 2025. The closure will be in effect daily from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., continuing through Friday, October 31. Crews will be removing the existing sidewalk, pouring new concrete, and allowing it to cure. During this time, the southbound shoulder of the causeway will also be closed to ensure work zone safety.

Pedestrians and cyclists are advised not to use the Causeway during construction hours for their safety.

This work is part of a larger $4 million maintenance contract to repair and upgrade sidewalks and ADA curb ramps at various locations along Routes 30 and 52 in Atlantic and Cape May counties. The entire project is expected to be completed by late spring 2026.

All ways organic

The pedestrian and bicycle path on the Howard S. Stainton Memorial Causeway (Route 52) is more than just a sidewalk; it’s a key recreational artery connecting Ocean City with Somers Point. It was a central feature of the massive $400 million causeway replacement project. Construction on the new, modern causeway began in 2006 and was officially opened in May 2012. A major design goal of the new bridge was to improve safety and accessibility for everyone, not just cars. This led to the creation of the 10-foot-wide, multi-use path that is completely separated from vehicle traffic by a barrier. The path provides a safe and scenic route for walkers, runners, and cyclists, offering sweeping views of Great Egg Harbor Bay.

Serving as both a recreational hub and a key connector, the 2.4-mile Route 52 Bridge Trail is a popular destination for residents and visitors seeking exercise and stunning bay views. The path provides a vital link to the Somers Point Bike Path and Ocean City’s local bike routes. A unique feature of the trail is its scenic “bumpouts,” which extend over the water, offering perfect spots for fishing or for pausing to enjoy the scenery.

The upcoming repairs, while a temporary inconvenience, are part of the routine maintenance required to keep this vital community asset safe and accessible for years to come.
