Sindia Trading Co., A New Brand Inspired by Ocean City’s Greatest Mystery
Inspired by a mystery that has captivated Ocean City for more than a century, a new brand is washing ashore. The Sindia Trading Co. is a clothing line that draws its inspiration from the famous wreck of the schooner, the Sindia, which ran aground off the coast of Ocean City in 1901.
We sat down with founder Gaets Juliano to talk about the brand’s origins, its unique approach to design, and what the future holds for this shipwreck-inspired clothing line.
For Juliano, the Sindia has always been more than just a shipwreck. “The Sinda has always felt like a mystery hiding in plain sight,” he explains. Juliano, who has a background in branding and design, wanted to create something that felt authentic to the island. “I wanted to create clothing that felt ‘found’ rather than mass-produced,” he said. His vision is a brand that would feel as if its pieces had washed ashore, weathered by the sea and time. Think garment-dyed tees with salt-faded colors and a focus on texture, tone, and storytelling. Each drop is a limited-run, seasonal release, designed to feel like something you might discover in a crate uncovered on the beach.
To bring his vision to life, Juliano partnered with two companies that align with his brand’s ethos. Jetty Ink, a New Jersey-based company with deep roots in coastal craftsmanship and screen printing, handles the production. “They understand the shoreline—not just geographically, but culturally,” Juliano says. Their commitment to small-batch, high-quality production was a perfect match for the brand’s desire to stay special and never watered down.
For packaging, Juliano chose Better Packaging Co., a company focused on sustainability. The mailers are made from recycled ocean-bound plastic, a fitting choice that reinforces the brand’s connection to the sea and its commitment to eco-friendly practices.
Looking ahead, Juliano plans to expand the brand’s presence with more seasonal releases and potentially a brick-and-mortar location. He’s also exploring collaborations with other businesses that have deep roots in Ocean City, businesses that tell stories as old as the wreck itself. Ultimately, the mission remains the same: to keep the brand small, special, and “shipwrecked.”
