OCNJ Local Teams Up with Autumn Lake to Bring ‘Pure Joy’ to Seniors with Adopt a Grandparent Tree
The spirit of giving is taking root at Autumn Lake at Oceanview, where the annual “Adopt a Grandparent Tree” initiative is underway. With 144 residents, the nursing home is calling on the local community to help ensure every senior experiences the “pure joy” of receiving a personalized gift this holiday season.
The program is spearheaded by Melissa Loughlin, Director of Activities. Melissa Loughlin emphasized her commitment to creating a memorable holiday for all the residents. “The holidays are what bring families and friends together,” she said. “It is my pleasure to make these residents have the absolute best holiday season possible. It brings joy to everyone.”
Loughlin describes the initiative as a crucial effort to combat the profound effects of loneliness on older adults. “Adopting a grandparent this year is crucial due to the significant impact of loneliness on older adults. Loneliness can lead to health issues like depression and cognitive decline,” says Loughlin. “Engaging in such initiatives not only improves the lives of seniors but also enriches the volunteers’ experiences, promoting intergenerational understanding and community cohesion.”
The residents’ wish list is full of simple, heartfelt requests aimed at comfort and warmth. Melissa Loughlin reports that the most requested items include:
- Cozy Clothing: Sweatpants, sweatshirts, socks, pajamas, robes, and warm hats and gloves.
- Treats: Candies and snacks.
- Comfort Items: Warm blankets and arts and crafts supplies.
- Essentials: Gift cards.
The impact of these simple gifts is immediate and profound. “The typical reaction of the residents when they receive their gift is PURE JOY,” Loughlin shared. “There really is no other way to say it. The residents light up.”
The official “Adopt a Grandparent Tree” is currently set up in the facility’s lobby. The tree has tags listing each resident’s name and wish. The community is invited to visit the facility to choose a tag and become a secret Santa for one of Autumn Lake’s residents.
The deadline for dropping off gifts is Tuesday, December 10, 2025, giving the activities team time to organize and distribute the presents before Christmas. Please return all gifts unwrapped in a gift bag with the resident’s tag.
