Half a Century of “Almost Famous” Donuts: Brown’s Restaurant Celebrates 50 Years in Ocean City
If the North End of the Boardwalk in Ocean City had a heartbeat, it would sound like the rhythmic clink-clink of a donut machine and smell like cinnamon sugar wafting over St. Charles Place. This year, Brown’s Restaurant officially hits a golden milestone, celebrating 50 years of serving the families, surfers, and vacationers who make the pilgrimage to the quiet end of the boards.
The core philosophy remains untouched. According to owner Jim Brown, the recipe for their five-decade run is simple: family.
“Being a close-knit family is what does it,” Jim says. “My brothers and sisters, their children, my children, we were all real close. We laugh a lot.”
That family tree is the backbone of the daily operations. The team includes Jim’s siblings and their families: his brother Dave and wife Amy, with their boys Alex, Luke, and Will; sister Kathy and husband Dan, with children Laura, Emily, and Mark; sister Sue and husband Jim, with children Sean, Brad, and Kristen, his sister Linda, and of course Jim and his wife Melissa, along with their four children, Hailey, Cynthia, James, and Paige. “All of the family has been the recipe to our success,” he notes. To honor this legacy, the restaurant plans to host a special “Brown’s Family Day” this July, when only family members will be behind the counter. They are excited to announce the date soon. Be sure to follow them on social media so you don’t miss it.
The Brown’s story began in 1976, when Harmon and Marjorie Brown founded the eatery. While much of the world has changed since the mid-70s, Brown’s takes pride in its constancy. “We don’t change a lot!” Jim laughs. “We stick with what we know and don’t fix what’s not broken. We just add here and there and adapt with the times.” That dedication to tradition is best represented by their donuts, hot, fresh, and made to order.
The 50th anniversary isn’t just a celebration of the owners, but of the patrons who have grown up alongside the restaurant. The Browns have watched three generations of customers pass through their doors, becoming as much a part of the family as the staff. “Our customers are loyal and they come back year after year,” Jim says. He points to regulars like Sandy and Joan, who have visited 150 days in a row and counting, and families like Wendy and Tim, who once brought their four boys and now return with their grandchildren.
“Blood, sweat, and tears mixed in with a lot of laughter and love,” is how Jim describes the journey. “We love Ocean City and we want people to have a memorable experience. Good, homemade food. We feel blessed to be able to do that.”
As the 2026 summer season kicks off, there is no better time to rediscover the tradition that has anchored the North End for half a century. Whether you are a lifelong local or a first-time visitor, make sure to detour to St. Charles Place and the Boardwalk to soak in the views and say hello to the Brown family. And be sure to follow your nose to that famous donut window, it simply isn’t a trip to Ocean City without a Brown’s donut (or two). Here’s to fifty years of sweetness, and many more to come.
