Recognizing Local Heroism: An Update for OCNJ Local

The Life Saving Benevolent Association of New York (LSBA) has officially recognized the extraordinary bravery of Ocean City’s own Frank LaFerrara, honoring him for a heroic rescue that took place off the 9th Street beach in October 2025. This prestigious award places LaFerrara, 73 years young, among a select group of citizens recognized for their selfless actions in the waters of New York and New Jersey.

The incident occurred during the “off-season,” a time when Ocean City’s beaches are no longer protected by the Beach Patrol. LaFerrara was on the beach when he noticed a young woman struggling significantly in the rough surf. Without hesitation, he entered the ocean and swam approximately 150 feet through a powerful rip current to reach her.

The rescue was far from simple; the victim was in a state of high-intensity panic. As LaFerrara reached her, the woman’s instinct for survival led her to grab and inadvertently push him underwater. Despite the physical struggle and the dangerous conditions, LaFerrara remained composed, utilizing his strength and knowledge of the water to stabilize her. He kept her afloat and guided her back toward the shoreline, where a bystander eventually arrived with a flotation device to help bring them safely ashore.

To honor such “daring deeds,” the LSBA maintains a tradition of awarding medals in three distinct classes, each representing the level of risk and skill involved in the rescue:

• Gold Medal: The highest honor, reserved for individuals who perform a rescue at extreme personal risk to their own life, demonstrating heroic daring under life-threatening conditions.

• Silver Medal: Awarded for extraordinary effort and “signal exertion.” This medal recognizes rescuers who face significant danger and show exceptional skill in successfully saving a life.

• Bronze Medal: Awarded to those who demonstrate selfless courage and unhesitating action to rescue others from peril in navigable waters.

For his calm and persistent effort to save the swimmer, LaFerrara was awarded the Silver Medal.

Founded in 1849, the Life Saving Benevolent Association of New York was created to encourage and reward the “courage and skill” required to save lives at sea. For 175 years, the organization has stood as a pillar of maritime safety, having honored more than 1,000 individuals.

Today, the association is closely affiliated with the Seamen’s Church Institute (SCI). Founded in 1834, SCI is North America’s largest mariners’ service agency, providing chaplaincy, legal defense, and maritime education to seafarers in the Port of New York and Newark, as well as around the United States.

By celebrating LaFerrara’s selfless acts, the LSBA and the Seamen’s Church Institute ensure that the spirit of maritime heroism remains alive. The award serves as both a tribute to a neighbor’s courage and the enduring bond between the Ocean City community and the sea.
