Under the Tent: Ocean City Free Public Library Kicks Off Summer Reading with Free Outdoor Event Today
Summer has arrived in full force, and the Ocean City Free Public Library (OCFPL) is moving events outdoors.
If you’re seeking an ideal family activity this afternoon, the library has arranged a large event tent for outdoor programming on the recently landscaped open space adjacent to the parking lot. To mark the occasion, they are hosting a completely free summer kickoff festival today, Tuesday, June 30, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
This year’s theme is “Unearth a Story,” and organizers are going all out. The lawn will feature games, interactive dinosaur-themed activities, and live music from the Hampton Brass Quartet + Drums.
The event welcomes attendees of all ages. Families can register for the 2026 Summer Reading Challenge, relax under the new tent, and visit one of our island’s top community features: the official OCFPL Bookmobile.

Spotlight on the OCFPL Bookmobile: A Library on the Go
For those who haven’t visited it yet, the Bookmobile functions as a complete library branch on wheels. It is a familiar sight at local parades, the weekly Wednesday Farmers Market at the Tabernacle, and the 34th Street Sandcastle Park concert series. This “Library on the Go” delivers literature directly to the community.
It features a fully browsable, rotating selection of books, DVDs, audiobooks, and magazines, all available for immediate checkout.
Pro Tip for Locals: You can request specific items online via the main library catalog and select the Bookmobile as your pickup location. When it arrives in your neighborhood or at a local market, your books will be ready for you.
The Bookmobile operates a vital Homebound Library Delivery Program. Every two weeks, it delivers materials directly to Ocean City residents who are unable to leave their homes because of age, illness, or disability, ensuring our community stays connected regardless of mobility issues.
Ocean City Free Public Library Summer FAQ
Here’s a quick FAQ to help you make the most of your library benefits this summer at the Simpson Avenue Community Center.
- How do I get an OCFPL library card?
- Ocean City residents and property owners can join at no cost. Simply visit the first-floor circulation desk with proof of residency or property ownership, such as a valid NJ driver’s license, tax bill, or utility bill.
- Students and city employees: If you are employed by the City of Ocean City or attend or work at one of the three Ocean City School District schools, you are eligible for a free card, regardless of your permanent residence.
- Visitors & Summer Guests: If you’re here only for the season, you can purchase a 90-day temporary membership card for $15.00 or a full-year card for $25.00.
- Can I check out digital items while sitting on the beach?
Certainly. Your library card provides free access to the Libby and hoopla apps. You can immediately stream or download more than 30,000 digital titles—such as e-books, audiobooks, and popular magazines—straight to your phone or Kindle, all from your beach chair.
- What are the standard borrowing limits and loan periods?
You can have up to 30 physical items checked out on your card at one time.
- 2 Weeks: Includes books, audiobooks, music CDs, and magazines.
- 1 Week: Entertainment movies, video games, TV series, and popular tech gadgets such as mobile Wi-Fi hotspots, Rokus, and museum passes.
- What if I can’t find a parking spot at the Community Center?
Parking during summer at the complex can be crowded. If the lot is full, the library’s Curbside Pickup Service provides a convenient alternative. Call the curbside desk at (609) 399-2434, extension 5226, ahead of time, share your card details, and a staff member will bring your holds directly to your vehicle for easy pickup.
